They say cleanliness is next to godliness so start the new year as you mean to go on by having a clean and organized refrigerator. We have to remember that the fridge and freezer stores items we ingest so we have to ensure that we keep our food and drink bacteria free and safe to consume. Here are our 8 top tips to help you achieve this goal.
1. Baskets are your best friend
Use small baskets to organize items in your fridge. Label these baskets for easier access. One of the advantages of this arrangement is that you can easily clean up your fridge. All you have to do is remove the boxes and wipe your shelf clean before replacing.
2. Use clear containers for raw food
Use clear and tightly sealed containers to store raw meat and seafood so it’s easy to find which one you’d like to get and thaw out. Ensure you label your tubs with the date the food was stored. Make sure to store them on the bottom shelf of the freezer to avoid drips on other food. This is also the coldest part of your freezer.
3. Minimise odour
Often that piece of fish leaves a lingering smell for a little while longer than you may like. Having a small, open dish or box with some bicarbonate of soda will ensure odours are absorbed, leaving your fridge smelling fresh again.
4. Storing leftover food
When organising your leftover food, make sure that you put the most recent food behind older leftovers so that you consume in date order. Always remember, first one in should be the first one out.
5. Spoiled food out!
Remove spoiled food immediately to prevent contaminating other food with bacteria. When you’re storing your leftovers, make sure that they are kept for a maximum of 4 days. It is highly encouraged to throw away leftover food that has been in the fridge for longer than that so as to discourage a build up of potentially harmful bacteria.
6. Wipe, wipe, wipe
Make sure to keep the fridge hygienic by ensuring all spills and messes are immediately wiped clean. All containers should be thoroughly washed prior to storing them in the fridge and keep that sticky residue from building up on bottles by giving a quick wipe after each use. This helps keep your shelves remaining clean, fresh and free from bacteria.
7. Check the dates
Expired items should be removed from the fridge immediately to conserve space and also to avoid accidentally consuming them. Those that easily spoil should be placed on the front portion of the fridge so that you’re constantly reminded to “eat me”!
8. Plastic mats or plastic wrap on your shelves
Plastic mats and plastic wrap makes it a whole lot easier for you to clean your fridge. For busy parents, it is the easiest way to clean those shelves. No need to remove them one by one to wash them. Just take out the mats and wipe them clean. For plastic wraps, just rip them out and throw them away.
