The dishwasher is one of the best appliances you should invest in.  Not only does it help you get dishes done, it can also clean several things you never expect you could. What a lot of people don’t know is that there are so many items you can put inside your dishwasher.  We have listed down some of the surprising things we have discovered to be dishwasher-friendly.  Just don’t forget to consider some things on a separate load to your dirty crockery and always check the manual before putting something new in.

Iron Cooktop Grates

After daily cooking, grease and grime build-up needs to be removed from these babies.  Get them inside the dishwasher regularly and keep them clean and shiny.

Sponge and Kitchen brushes

Keep your sponge and dish brushes clean by throwing them in the dishwasher.  Say goodbye to stinky and dirty sponges and brushes.

Silicone Mitts

Baking can be very therapeutic to some but we can’t deny the fact that it can be very stressful when cleaning time comes. Silicone mitts are usually the ones that get neglected when cleaning as they don’t seem to be as messy as those mixing bowls.  However, they do need that cleaning so pop them in the dishwasher to get rid of all that sticky mess that clings to it.

Microwave Turntables

Another often neglected item in the kitchen. There are a number of methods for cleaning inside the microwave, but cut the elbow grease down by popping the turntable in the dishwasher.  Just make sure you allow it to cool down before putting it in the rack and it’s worth double checking the manual to make sure there’s no reason not to clean it with your dishes.

Refrigerator Shelves and Bins

Most of the refrigerators now have removable shelves and bins that you can put in the dishwasher for easy cleaning.  A good wipe down gets most things up but a couple of times a year, it’s worth letting the dishwasher work its magic.

Jars and Vases

Many of the jars and vases we keep at home are left out for a long time without cleaning.  Dust builds up at the bottom and on the sides and, depending on their shape, it can often be tricky to get down inside. So it’s a good idea to put them in the dishwasher for that regular clean they deserve.

Hairbrushes and Combs

Hairbrushes and combs that are made of plastic can be placed inside the dishwasher.  Just make sure to remove any hair in the bristles beforehand.  The high temperatures will ensure any head-lice considering setting up home are sent on their way.  Our friends from Elk Grove CA Pest Control have some other useful tips with keeping pests at bay.

Bath Toys

Washing bath toys in the dishwasher can help get rid of mold and mildew.  Just make sure to get rid of water inside before putting them inside.

Plastic Toys and Lego

Clean your plastic toys and lego pieces in the dishwasher.  It sanitises and gets rid of bacteria and viruses.  Using a mesh zip-up laundry bag to contain all the little bits and pieces makes the process that bit easier.

Baseball Caps

To clean baseball caps without ruining their shape, all you need to do is put them inside the dishwasher.  Who knew?

Tools

Garden tools, pliers, screw drivers and other tools can be cleaned inside the dishwasher.  Just make sure not to put in those tools with wooden handles.

Flip Flops

Surprisingly, flip flops are also dishwasher-friendly.  Just make sure to remove excess dirt before putting them in.  Be sure to keep them on a separate load.

These are just some of the most surprising things we can put in the dishwasher.  Don’t forget to rinse and clean your dishwasher to make sure it stays germ-free.
